China prohibits Bitcoin transactions

In an attempt to cool demand for virtual currency, China’s central bank has banned financial institutions from handling Bitcoin transactions.

Financial institutions and payment companies can no longer buy, sell, trade or price the currency, which the authorities hope will stem money laundering via Bitcoin transactions.

This followed the People’s Bank of China saying the currency was “meaningless,” which prompted a 20% drop in Bitcoin value on Internet exchanges.
