Spy tech to be considered as weapons

Spying technology could soon be classified as weapons equipment, via ratification of an international treaty.

Financial Times cites the proposal, which would regulate “complex surveillance and hacking software and cryptography”.

Should the 1996 Wassenaar Arrangement – signed by 41 countries in 1996 as an arms control measure – incorporate security technologies, it would classify some commercially available snooping technology in the same bracket as guns.
