Paid digital news products on the rise

More people are willing to pay for online news, according to a survey of more than 11,000 internet users in nine countries.

The second annual Reuters Institute Digital News Report published on 20 June reveals that in Denmark, France, Germany, the UK and the US, 11 per cent of respondents had paid for online news in the past year, representing an increase of more than one third. In Brazil, Italy, Japan and Spain, which were included in the study for the first time, the figure was close to 20 percent. Among those who were not already paying for online news, 14 per cent said that they would consider purchasing such content in the future, with smartphone and tablet users, as well as young people aged 25 to 34 being most willing to do so. These figures include everything ranging from small fees for single articles to annual subscription payments.
