Phishing – but not as we know it

Spear phishing has been highlighted as the most prolific and successful type of email bluff and accounts for over 90% of breaches.

In a report published as an infographic by security-as-a-service company Proofpoint, they say 95% of cyber espionage incursions start with a spearphishing attack.

The practice of sending malicious emails that appear to come from a trusted source such as online stores and the likes of PayPal, Amazon, and UPS/Fedex/DHL generates open rates of over 70%, making for an expensive fix should the attack be at the corporate or national level.
